Delta WIFI speedtest - T1 download speeds!

This is pretty good - Just did a quick speedtest on DSL reports. Looks like roughtly 1.6 Mbit downstream and 300 kbit upstream. I’m impressed.. Its faster than my verizon aircard is sometimes on the ground!

As my flightattendant just announced : “Delta is in the 21st Century!” - now theres WIFI Posting this from the air on the first Delta flight I have taken with wifi.

Service seems reasonably quick and is $9.99 fixed price. Maybe I should do a speedtest in the name of science. Its interesting how we are perfectly willing to pay 10 bucks for an hour or two of internet as long as we are high in the air; while on the ground it’d be a much tougher sell.

Hopefully this is something that’ll be more available in the future. Its limited use from Atlanta to Washington DC, but for those cross country flights its perfect!

Sweet - the cypher of the tv-show fringe was cracked by one of the Ars guys. Turns out its pretty simple, but still kinda neat. Hopefully there’s more depth to the shows mysteries.

On a slightly related note, I can now play the show’s theme on my synth!

Valve’s Zombie Thriller Expanding In 2009

February 5, 2008 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced a series of content and development releases for its latest title, 2008’s best-selling new game property for the PC and Xbox 360, Left 4 Dead (L4D).

The first L4D DLC — dubbed the L4D Survival Pack — is due for release this spring and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic’s Choice Edition of the game will be heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 25 industry awards from outlets around the world.

The Chrome Dilemma

I, like many others, jumped on google’s Chrome open source browser - and I love it. Its fast, stable and has a lightweight feel to it. I am sure this is partially due to it not having a load of plugins, toolbars and so on that bog down Firefox and IE.

This unfortunately is also the source of my dilemma. I can live without all my plugins, except Roboform. With the number of sites and services I use for various things, this is probably one of the most useful pieces of software I have ever purchased.

I have been reading about the bookmarklets that people used to make a fake google toolbar’ and I suppose that you could use the password database in Chrome, the problem is that it doesnt sync across computers. If google had used their already existing password reminder feature in the toolbar it would have been better.

At any rate, for now Chrome will be my meebo/gmail/cloud computing browser mainly until Google straightens stuff out. I’ll bet we get a major Chrome update in the next 2-3 months; so lets hope.

I know I’m behind on the fringe stuff, but I found this video pretty neat. The show is cool although the last episode about computer programs melting brains offends my professional pride. It is like all those hacker movies where they press 10 buttons and they’re into the NSA Mainframe or some other gibberish.

Stumbled upon this and seems like a really cool and simple site for musicians and producers to share songs and audioclips. You can preview clips online even view their waveforms, which is handy for IDM/EDM (intelligent/electronic dance music).

Its not quite a contender to something like Beatport when it comes to sharing and selling your tracks, but for sending clips and tracks to your friends, it seems interesting

The Year of Facebook Birthday Wishes!

So today is my birthday. No big deal, I had a bunch of them before.

However, this year something new happened.. Normally friends and family call or send a happy birthday IM. But this year I got a crazy amount of happy birthday wallposts, hatching-eggs, birthday cards.

Its interesting how the functionality (wishes) stay the same, but has changed from letters, to actual greeting cards, to emails, to IM and now to social media.

Maybe next year we’ll be back to carrier pigeons!
